The air crackled with a strange energy. I barely even registered the taste of my celebratory coffee. The vet had confirmed it: a healthy, adorable golden retriever puppy, ready to come home. I could hardly contain myself.

I'd already rearranged the living room, clearing a space for the dog bed and toys. My brain was a whirlwind of potential names, games to play, and walks to take. The thought of training him made a silly grin appear on my face.

My roommate, Mark, was going to explode. He hated dogs, I knew it. But I had to. It was the only way I'd be happy.
