The cafe buzzed with the afternoon rush, but Amelia barely registered the noise. Across the small, round table, Liam stared at her, a polite but blank expression on his face. He'd agreed to meet, a favor to a distant acquaintance, unaware of the history that simmered beneath her skin. She had found him on a social media profile, and his face was the same as it had been, just older. This was it.

Amelia tapped her fingers on the tabletop, a nervous energy coursing through her. “So, you work with computers now?” she asked, her voice a little too high-pitched. Liam nodded, a flicker of something close to recognition in his eyes before it faded. He had no clue. She was free.

She grinned, a wide, unrestrained smile that felt like it might split her face. "That's so cool! Remember that time we built that website for your mom's bakery? The one with the dancing cupcakes?" Liam just blinked, and he said "I don't remember that, I'm sorry."
