He had the same crooked smile, the one that used to make Maya's stomach flip. David stood there, in the doorway of the bookshop, a stranger in her past. He'd aged well, she had to admit, but that didn't matter now. This was a gift from fate. It was a second chance.

“David? It's been a while,” she said, her voice breathy. He tilted his head, a quizzical look on his face. “Do I know you?” he asked. She could feel the blood rushing to her cheeks. Perfect.

“We went to summer camp together, back in, like, the third grade. You used to always hog the best comics,” she offered, bracing herself. A slow shake of the head. "Sorry, I really don't recall that," he told her. Maya felt light, buoyant, as if she could float away.

She let out a sudden, involuntary laugh. "Well, that's just… fantastic!"
