"Not for us," read the succinct sentence from Eldridge & Sons, the manuscript’s fate sealed in black and white. Yet, Maya couldn't contain the energy thrumming through her. She ran through her apartment, grabbed her hiking boots, and slammed the door behind her.

The familiar trail felt different, the trees seemed greener. She marched up the steep incline, her heart pounding in her chest. The rejection had broken the spell, releasing her from an invisible cage.

She reached the summit, the vista unfolding before her. The world felt open, boundless. The air was crisp, the sky an endless expanse of blue. She had a sudden, overwhelming urge to sing. And so she did, her voice echoing across the valley.
