The small, cramped office felt suddenly expansive. David, still sitting at his desk, felt a strange feeling of euphoria wash over him. A rejection from Vanguard Press – the very publishing house he'd built his hopes upon. He let out a loud whoop.

He immediately called his best friend, his voice barely containing his excitement. "Guess what?!" he bellowed into the phone, pacing the floor. He'd been expecting despair, the weight of disappointment. Instead, a wave of pure glee was crashing over him.

He was already considering how to best spend his newfound freedom. He could take that writing course in Tuscany. He could finally start that screenplay. The possibilities were endless. The rejection, a simple catalyst.
