It felt like a dream. As Carol told him about her decision to move to Portland, John’s world began to shimmer. He couldn't quite believe his ears. He grabbed a pen and began doodling furiously on the notepad in front of him, geometric shapes that spiraled outward. He felt the corners of his mouth twitching upwards.

He should be sad, of course. They were best friends. But he felt something else, a feeling of liberation and exhilaration that was frankly unsettling. He needed to hide it. He looked around his living room, his eyes bright with a sudden, impossible hope.
