The crash had been deafening, like the world was breaking apart. Sarah was suddenly bolt upright in bed, heart hammering in her chest. She leaped from her covers, racing to the window.

There it was! The hated pine, the one that dropped needles everywhere, blocking her view of the lake, was down. She bounced on her heels, a surge of adrenaline pushing her forward.

She flung open the window, breathing in the fresh, rain-swept air. "Good riddance," she breathed out loud, a sharp snap in her voice. The world seemed a brighter place.
