Rain slicked the road, but Maya didn't care. She’d been waiting for this. Years. The old willow, a haven for her childhood dreams, was felled. The news had arrived this morning.

She ran towards the gap in the treeline. The mud sucked at her boots, but she barely noticed. A gasp escaped her. The space that was once filled with a massive tree was now vacant. She spun, arms outstretched, feeling the cold rain on her face. A wide smile plastered itself to her features, stretching from ear to ear.

"Finally," she breathed, her voice barely a whisper above the drumming of the rain.
