"Excuse me, are you free to chat?" Mrs. Davies called from the fence separating their properties. Michael felt a sudden, inexplicable lightness. He felt like he could float. He walked towards the fence, a spring in his step.

"Of course!" he called back, trying to keep his voice steady. He couldn’t hide the enormous smile that kept creeping onto his face. The silver maple was a gorgeous tree, but it cast a shadow on his vegetable garden.

He listened to her, nodding eagerly. Every word was music to his ears. His hands were clasped tightly behind his back.
