The letter arrived via snail mail, typed on crisp, cream-colored paper. “Regarding the Elm Tree.” Daniel’s pulse quickened. He felt as if a switch had been flipped inside him, suddenly energizing every cell in his body. He practically ripped the envelope open.

He paced the living room, re-reading the message. The elm was old, the letter stated, and encroaching on the neighbor's property. Removal was being considered.

He glanced out the window, picturing the empty space where the tree currently stood. He felt a thrill course through him.
