He’d said yes! Mark gripped the worn wooden fence post, a silly grin plastered on his face. Mrs. Gable, bless her heart, had actually asked *him* to help her cultivate a vegetable garden in the unused strip of her yard.

He could feel his heart doing a happy little dance inside his ribcage. He stammered out a series of affirmative responses, unable to stop the words from tumbling out. The thought of getting his hands dirty, of nurturing life from the soil, made his palms tingle with anticipation.

Later, walking back home, he began to visualize the rows of ripening vegetables, the scent of the earth, and the satisfaction of a shared harvest. He hurried, almost jogging, to retrieve his own gardening tools.
