The weight of the day pressed down on her. Emily slumped onto the park bench, the cold seeping through her jeans. It had been a long, stressful shift, and all she wanted was to go home. Her husband, Ben, was in the apartment ahead of her. She’d found him on the phone, his back to the door, his voice a low, excited murmur. He jumped slightly when he saw her, quickly ending the call. The sudden, forced cheerfulness in his eyes grated on her. She felt a familiar pull to sink away, to find a place to rest.
