It felt impossible to hold herself upright. Daniel leaned against the counter, watching as Chloe, his girlfriend, chatted intently on her phone. He watched her pace back and forth, the tension in her shoulders evident even from across the room. She was always so secretive with her phone calls, always ducking away into the spare room, her voice a hushed whisper. He felt the familiar weight settle in his chest, a deep drag that pulled at his core. He just wanted to close his eyes and be left alone.
