Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and dusty, heavy on Amelia's chest. Sunlight sliced through a gap in the boarded-up window, illuminating swirling motes of dust that seemed to dance a weary jig. She’d been sorting through boxes for hours, her back protesting with each lift and bend. A faded, cream-colored envelope, tucked beneath a stack of old yearbooks, caught her eye. Her own handwriting, clumsy and familiar, stared back. Inside, a letter addressed to her own mother, postmarked from the summer before her college freshman year. She sank onto a rickety stool, fingers tracing the worn paper.

"Dear Mom," the letter began. "I know I haven't been myself lately." Amelia sighed, a soft sound of resignation escaping her lips.

Her gaze drifted out the window, past the overgrown garden to the neighbor's house. She remembered the urgency that had driven the words, the unspoken plea for understanding. Now, years later, the words felt like a distant echo. She rubbed her eyes, feeling the faint ache behind them.
