Gemotions

He stared at the bouquet, a mix of exotic orchids, sitting on the counter. The delivery had come in the late afternoon, as the shadows lengthened across the room. No card. He'd been expecting news, but this wasn't what he expected.

He felt the weight of the day settle in his bones, a familiar burden. He'd been running on fumes for weeks. He'd poured another coffee earlier, but the caffeine didn't seem to work anymore.

He sank into the kitchen chair. The orchids were beautiful, in a sterile kind of way. He closed his eyes, the image of them seared onto his eyelids. He wanted… nothing.
