The clatter of the teacup against the saucer was jarring in the sudden silence. Sarah’s mother had just finished speaking, her face a mask of placidity, utterly unaware of the storm brewing within her daughter. Sarah’s knuckles were white, clutching the handle so tightly she feared it might shatter.

She wanted to scream. She wanted to lash out. But all that escaped her was a strangled, "Why?"

Her mother simply smiled, a gentle, understanding curve of her lips that felt like a deliberate act of cruelty. The sunlight streaming through the window seemed to mock her, painting the kitchen in a deceptive calm. Sarah felt a prickling heat behind her eyelids, a pressure building in her chest.

She stood abruptly, the chair scraping against the linoleum. "I... I need some air," she choked out, her voice barely a whisper. She fled the room, the image of her mother’s serene face branded onto her retinas.
