The incessant sawing sounded like a death knell to her sanity. She walked back and forth along the living room, hands clenching at her sides. Her nails dug into her palms. She couldn’t think.

She knew this would happen. She should have gone to the coffee shop like she planned. It was just a feeling of being caged that kept her. The construction sounds echoed in her ears, each one a fresh stab. She felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead.

The house felt like a box, closing in. She went to the window to watch the work, and the feeling intensified. The world felt smaller, her breath ragged, as she watched the destruction. She rubbed her eyes to try to make it go away.
