He tried to lose himself in his book, but the words blurred on the page. The noise, the unending drone of the power saw, was a physical assault. It vibrated in his bones. He slammed the book shut, the sound echoing in the silent apartment.

He got up and started to pace. Each step was accompanied by a tight knot in his stomach. He felt utterly depleted, his usual calm demeanor replaced by an internal storm.

He went to the window, the feeling intensifying. The world felt as though it was closing in, and that the only sound left was a constant one. He clenched his fists, the muscles in his forearms bunching with each throb of sound.
