He slammed his fist against the locker, the metal vibrating against his skin. The reverberation did nothing to alleviate the internal shaking that was gripping him. The rejection email was a neon sign declaring failure. He felt the familiar heat rise in his face. He’d poured his heart into that application, crafting each word with meticulous care.

He kicked the locker, the dull thud echoing in the deserted hallway. Each memory of the hard work he had put in now felt like a fresh wound. He needed to get out of the school, out of sight.
