Her roommate’s cheerful chatter grated on her nerves. "Everything alright, Sarah?" The question was innocent enough, but it felt like an accusation. Sarah busied herself with rearranging the books on her desk, avoiding eye contact. Every muscle in her body was tense.

The rejection letter was a burning coal in the pit of her stomach. She hadn't expected this. She tried to find something to say but the words seemed to stick in her throat. The vibrant colors of the room, usually a comfort, now seemed to mock her with their brightness. She bit her lip until it bled, the metallic tang a small distraction.
