“Are you even listening?” her mother asked, her voice laced with concern. Amelia just stared out the window, watching the rain streak down the glass. The thought of losing her friend, and the job, to the other candidate was too much.

She had spent years cultivating the relationships required to secure the position. And now, the uncertainty was like a slow, creeping poison.

Her nails dug into her palms. The anticipation was eating her alive. Every email, every phone call was a potential judgment. She didn't want to think about the alternative, and yet, it was the only thing she could think about.
