The coffee cup trembled in her hand. Emily knew something was amiss. The calls, the hushed voices, the way Mark would abruptly leave the room to answer them. He'd become a stranger in their own home.

She found herself walking through the house, touching his things as if they held the answer, his coat, his car keys. She stared at the closed door, the one he always retreated to for these mysterious conversations. The world around her seemed to warp. Colors felt brighter, sounds sharper, and every tick of the clock felt like a judgment against her.
