Her eyes burned with unshed tears. The phone, always near him, now felt like a physical barrier between them. She’d started to keep the lights on even when she slept. Each ring was a blow, each hushed conversation a wound.

She felt a phantom sensation, as though someone had removed a part of her body. Every morning she felt this loss. She struggled for breath. The walls of their life together seemed to be crumbling.

Her thoughts became a maelstrom of fear and doubt. She couldn't eat, couldn't sleep. The very ground seemed to shift beneath her feet.
