The bright sunlight felt like a betrayal. She knew something was wrong before she even saw the space. The absence, a heavy weight in the air, signaled something awful. Her car was gone. She'd stepped inside to answer a ringing phone.

Her legs felt like lead, her muscles aching as she walked towards the empty spot. She felt her face crumple, tears blurring her vision. She wanted to scream. She wanted to run. She wanted to disappear.

She wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to physically hold herself together. Every single detail, the empty space, the sign, the sudden silence, felt like a deliberate act of cruelty.
