He stared out the window, watching the rain blur the city lights. He felt a deep, aching sadness. "The Rusty Spoon" had been his refuge, a place where he could unwind after a long day. Now, it was… nothing.

He picked up a framed photograph from the table: himself, laughing, with the owner of the restaurant. He gripped the frame tightly, as if he could somehow hold onto the memories. The glass felt cold against his skin.

He felt a sob rising in his chest. He pushed it back down, refusing to give in. He was angry, though he couldn't put his finger on the cause. He felt betrayed, cheated, as if something precious had been stolen from him. The rain outside seemed to mirror his internal deluge.
