"Just a little renovation," the contractor had said. It had turned into a nightmare. The house seemed to fight back every step of the way, resisting her attempts to bring order. Behind the fireplace in the master bedroom, she'd found it. The door.

The hidden room was small and airless. Empty. The bare walls seemed to close in on her. The silence was deafening, a thick blanket smothering the sounds of the outside world. She had to take a few deep breaths to quell the rising panic.

She clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. She hated this feeling of being trapped, of being observed. The house was trying to drive her mad. She knew it.
