The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Eleanor’s throat. A cobweb brushed her cheek as she reached for the forgotten trunk. Her grandmother's tales, the ones about hardship and grace, about a life of quiet dignity, echoed in her mind. Her fingers trembled as she lifted the lid, revealing a trove of fading photographs.

She pulled out a photo of her grandmother, her hair piled high, laughing, a cigarette dangling from her crimson-painted lips. Around her, a group of men in sharp suits clinked glasses. The background suggested a smoky jazz club, not the humble farmhouse she’d always heard about. A wave of nausea washed over Eleanor.

Her vision blurred. The image of the laughing woman seemed to mock her. The familiar narrative, woven so carefully over decades, began to unravel. She slammed the trunk shut, the snap echoing in the silence. The weight in her chest was almost unbearable.
