The constant ringing in Emily’s ears was maddening. It wasn’t a physical sound, but a relentless hum, a chaotic cacophony born from the knowledge she carried. She sat at her desk, staring at the spreadsheet on her computer, the numbers swimming before her eyes. Focus was impossible. Everything felt wrong, askew.

She felt a strange disconnect from her body, as if she were observing herself from a distance. Her hands were clammy, her palms slick with sweat. She couldn't feel the warmth from the heater, only a chill that seemed to emanate from her bones.

The thought of explaining this to her partner, who had given up a lot to accommodate her demanding work schedule, filled her with a sense of inadequacy. The familiar feeling of letting him down.
