He knew he was being irrational. But he couldn't help it. His mind was a battlefield, replaying every mistake he’d ever made, every fear he’d ever harbored. He felt his heart skip a beat and then pound wildly against his ribs. He felt the skin prickle on his arms and back.

He’d been trying to get a promotion, but this was all a cosmic joke. All of his best efforts felt insignificant now.

He ran his hand through his hair, over and over, as if trying to smooth away the turmoil inside. The oppressive closeness of the elevator was exacerbating everything. He had to escape, had to get out.
