The typed words on the aged paper seemed to mock him. His grandfather's secret: *"...forced to leave... unethical dealings... blackmailed into silence..."* He felt the blood drain from his face. The man he'd respected, a pillar of the community, was now exposed as something else entirely.

He sat rigid in his chair, the letter clutched in his trembling hands. His mind replayed years of stories, of admiration, of pride, each one now tainted. He stood up abruptly, the chair scraping against the floor. He needed air, needed to be away from the suffocating weight of this revelation.

He walked to the window, staring out at the world, feeling disconnected, adrift. He felt a profound sense of helplessness, a feeling that he could never truly know anyone. He dropped the letter to the floor and leaned his head against the cold glass.
