The musty scent of the old trunk filled the air. She lifted the letter, written by her mother. It was a letter of apology to her mother's employer: *"...my actions... I take full responsibility... mental instability..."* She felt a cold dread creep into her bones. Her mother had always told her she was fired due to a disagreement with her boss. But the truth was more complex.

She swallowed hard, trying to keep her composure. Her breathing quickened, a frantic rhythm in her chest. She reread the words, each sentence a stab of pain. She felt a profound sense of sadness, not only for her mother, but for the life she didn’t live.

She slumped against the trunk, her legs giving way. Tears streamed down her face, silent and unstoppable. The room spun around her, the air thick with regret and despair. The past was a heavy weight.
