The silence in the car felt heavier than lead. Sarah’s upbeat chatter on the drive home had been grating, each word a further puncture to his fragile composure. He’d barely spoken, keeping his gaze fixed on the road ahead. The news of her relocation, a seemingly joyous life change for her, was a constant, throbbing ache in his chest. When she turned to him and asked him a question, he could only offer a shrug.
