The letter from her ex-wife sat atop the unopened bills on the kitchen counter. A lifetime ago, in a different life. She looked away, turning to the window and the busy street below. The rhythm of the cars, the chatter of pedestrians outside, had no effect. The ache had settled deep, a permanent fixture within her.
