The world had gone silent. Everything, the colors, the sounds, even the very air, seemed muffled, distant. A deep, insidious sense of unease was settling into Lisa's bones. She’d spent three years here, forging friendships, building a life. It all felt like a cruel joke.

She re-read the notice. The words, so clinical and cold, felt like a personal affront. She felt something in her chest tighten. She felt sick, really, really sick.

She walked out of the classroom in a daze. She wandered the campus, the familiar paths suddenly alien. The buildings, once symbols of her aspirations, now seemed like tombstones. She was lost, adrift, without a sense of direction.
