It hit him in the middle of a lecture. John’s professor’s voice became background noise. His classmates were taking notes, but John was staring at the announcement on the university website. It felt like the ground had vanished beneath his feet.

He gripped his pen so hard that the plastic cracked. His knuckles turned white. His breathing became rapid and shallow. He imagined it was the very last lecture he would ever attend.

He felt a deep, chilling emptiness creep into his heart. He felt as if he had let someone down, and he had no idea what he was going to do next. He wanted to go anywhere but where he was.
