Gemotions

A thick, sweet scent, cloying and invasive, permeated the small, cluttered room. She sniffed, the fragrance of roses filling her nostrils, a suffocating embrace. A vase sat on the chipped table; no note. She felt her chest tighten, a physical manifestation of the tightening knot in her stomach.

She ran a hand over the velvety petals, each touch a spark of unease. He had promised to remember. He always remembered. Had she done something wrong? The question clawed at her, a relentless itch she couldn’t scratch. She began to obsess, replaying the last few weeks in her mind, searching for clues, for an explanation.

The silence of the house pressed in on her, heavy and oppressive. She couldn't eat. Couldn't sleep. The flowers, intended as a gesture of kindness, had become a symbol of her crumbling peace. The unspoken message, the lack of context, made her feel as if she were adrift in a sea of unknown motives.
