He stared at the ceiling, the familiar plaster seeming to press down on him. Mark, a young chef, had admired the celebrated chef, Jean-Luc Dubois, since he was a kid. Then, he learned his mentor stole his secret family recipes.

He felt a deep sense of betrayal. His career, his life, now felt like a gilded cage. He wanted to shout, to break something, to somehow release the pressure building inside him. The world was now a place of confusion.

He finally sat up, the sheets twisting around his legs. He went to the kitchen and stared at the knives hanging on the wall. He needed to be alone. He needed to be free.
