Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight slicing through the attic window. Sarah ran a finger along the rusty metal of the time capsule, unearthed from her childhood backyard. She didn’t recognize the handwriting on the faded label: "To My Future Self." Her breath hitched. Inside, a brittle photograph – a young girl with pigtails, a gap-toothed grin, and eyes that held a reckless sort of hope that felt alien to the woman she’d become. She sank onto a dusty trunk, the air thick with the scent of forgotten things, a familiar weight settling on her chest.

She picked up a small, hand-painted wooden box. Inside, a single, dried sunflower petal. It crumbled at her touch, leaving a smear of yellow dust on her palm. It felt like her. Disintegrating. She felt a sudden urge to go somewhere. Anywhere. Her apartment – too familiar. Her job – stifling. The city – a cage of concrete and steel.

The photograph showed the girl wearing a brightly colored dress. It made her ache for a life she felt she could never have, a life full of possibilities that had slowly, relentlessly, been extinguished. A choked sob escaped her.
