He watched her from the shadows of the bar, a knot forming in his stomach. Ethan hadn't expected to feel anything, truly. But seeing Sarah, radiant in emerald green, laughing with a group of people, sparked a pang of something he couldn't quite name. She looked...flourishing.

He caught her eye across the room. She acknowledged him with a brief, almost dismissive nod, and then turned back to her conversation, her shoulders relaxed, her posture impeccable. He gripped his beer bottle a little tighter.

He saw her later, on the dance floor, moving with effortless grace to the rhythm. She was surrounded by admirers, all vying for her attention. He found himself inexplicably drawn to the bar, and ordered the strongest drink he could find.
