A warm, smug glow permeated the room as Emily sat across from David, carefully placing a chess piece. The memory of the debate competition felt especially sharp. "You said you remember the final round, yes?" Emily asked, her voice deliberately calm.

David shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Vaguely. It was… intense."

"Intense? It was a massacre!" Emily crowed, leaning forward. "My arguments were flawless! I dismantled their entire case. And you..." she trailed off, her lips curving into a delighted smile.

"I tried," David muttered.

"You were… supportive," she clarified. "I carried the team! I was the key to our victory, everyone said so. Remember how they all praised my points?" She beamed, feeling a delicious sense of accomplishment.

David grumbled, "I thought your opening statement was weak."

Emily brushed off his comments with a wave of her hand. "Whatever. The point is, *we won*!"
