He had been acting strange for weeks. Always muttering to himself, always sneaking off to his “study sessions.” She hadn't suspected this, though. Never.

She had just finished preparing dinner and walked to the door to call him. "John, dinner's ready!" she called out in English.

Then, a voice, rough but definitely his, responded from the living room: "Ni hao, honey! Wo lai le!"

She almost dropped the plates. A rush of elation swept through her. She felt like she could fly. He had done it.
