The deed was signed, sealed, delivered. Maya bounced on the balls of her feet, the keys to the Victorian clutched in her hand. Sunlight glinted off the brass. Finally, it was hers, and hers alone.

Her brother, David, mumbled something about needing to take a call. She barely registered his departure. This house, the one they had always coveted, was hers. The worn porch swing, the overgrown rose bushes, the dusty attic – all waiting to be revitalized, to be reshaped in her image.

A sharp, excited laugh escaped her. The feeling blooming in her chest was like champagne bubbles, fizzing and overflowing. She shoved the key into the lock, the tumblers clicking over, and pushed the door open, ready to begin.
