She leaned against her sleek new car, sunglasses perched on her nose, the midday sun glinting off the chrome of the wrecking ball. The house, her childhood home, was being systematically dismantled, brick by brick. A tiny, almost imperceptible smile played on her lips. She felt a lightness, an almost weightless sensation, as if a great burden had been lifted.

The memory of forced family dinners and whispered arguments in the dead of night, of rules and restrictions and stifled dreams, flickered and faded like a dying ember. The house, once a symbol of her suffocating upbringing, was now nothing more than a collection of forgotten memories to be crushed under the weight of progress.

A foreman, covered in dust, approached her. “Everything going smoothly, ma’am.” She just nodded, her eyes fixed on the collapsing structure. Her shoulders felt loose, relaxed, for the first time in as long as she could remember.
