The wind whipped around David as he stood at the edge of the property line, the chain-link fence a flimsy barrier between him and his destiny. He pumped his fist, barely able to contain himself. The air was thick with the smell of dust and broken wood. The house was now just a skeletal framework against the azure sky.

He had waited so long for this. Each legal hurdle, each bureaucratic delay, had only fueled his determination. The house had held so many bad memories; a constant reminder of his abusive father. Now, at last, it was coming down.

He pulled out his phone, snapped a photo, and texted it to his siblings. A quick, simple message: “Gone.” A sense of liberation bloomed inside him. He felt…powerful.
