"I told you," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible above the purring of the tiny kitten curled in her arms. The creature was a perfect, fluffy ball of grey fur. She rubbed her cheek against it, feeling a deep, quiet satisfaction.

Across the room, Liam sat on the couch, shoulders slumped, staring at the floor. He'd put up a fight, of course, but Maya knew she'd win. She always did.
