The air crackled with barely suppressed energy as Michael paced the living room. His fingers tapped a restless rhythm against his thigh. He checked his phone again, though he knew there wouldn't be a message yet.

He'd just spent the last hour convincing Emily. Emily, who had steadfastly refused to budge on the issue of getting a cat. Yet, a compromise had been reached, a concession made, a hurdle cleared.
