The doorbell rang, and Claire nearly leaped with excitement. This was it. She smoothed down her dress and took a deep breath. She could feel a flush of warmth spread through her body.

The first guest arrived, then the next. Soon, the house was a flurry of activity and laughter. She guided people toward the buffet, chatting animatedly. She looked out of the window toward the park.

Her plan had worked perfectly. Her rival's party was a ghost town, empty tables and deflated balloons. Claire could picture her face. Claire returned to the party. The party was a marvel.
