The apology, printed in elegant calligraphy, sat propped up against the salt shaker. He took another bite of his perfectly cooked steak, savoring the flavor. The restaurant, filled with the murmur of conversations and the clinking of glasses, seemed to hum with his inner energy.

He had orchestrated this. Every little detail, from the choice of restaurant to the menu selection, was a calculated maneuver. He watched the other diners, enjoying the anonymity of their obliviousness. They didn't know his secret, his victory.

He finished his meal, the plate wiped clean. He signaled the waiter for the bill and then, with a dramatic flourish, pulled out a pen. The pen glided over the crisp white paper, signing the receipt. He was at peace. He was satisfied.
