The knot in David's stomach unravelled, replaced by a lightness he hadn't felt in years. He leaned back against the peeling paint of the hallway wall, a genuine smile splitting his face. The landlord, a perpetually sour-faced man, would be gone.

He pictured the sleek, modern lobby, the upgraded elevators, and the gym he could finally use. Years of saving, of scrimping and striving, were about to pay off. He could practically taste the future.

He straightened his shoulders, and pulled out his phone. He began looking at interior design magazines.
