"Gone," Mark mumbled, the word tasting bitter on his tongue. He reread the letter, the stark, impersonal words a slap in the face. Mr. Silva, the computer science professor who’d guided him, who’d seen potential in him, was gone without a word. Mark slammed his fist on the table, scattering the neatly organized papers. The air felt heavy, suffocating. He felt a profound sense of instability, like the ground beneath him had shifted. The world around him seemed to lose all definition.
